How?

Because they act not only on the body's muscular system and joints but also on the whole body systems by way of:

- using the breath: deep abdominal breathing is best, vital energy (vitality) circulates throughout the body, gently pushing through emotional and physical blockages.Changes in breathing create mental and emotional changes, hence 'psycho-physical'.

- bringing our attention to the movements and allowing us to 'feel' the body sensations, so we are able to bring more awareness to any possible tensions brought on by anxiety and stress. And by becoming aware of these tensions, we can choose to accept and relax into them rather than resist them (which is actually one of the ways to relieve stress).

- using special postures/movements as in Chi Kung and Tai Chi, which act on the energy meridians of the body to reinstate a natural flow of vital energy (by opening the joints and thus allowing vital energy to 'burn through' muscular energy blockages).

These aspects intermingle; they act on our physical, emotional and mental systems, integrating these as one energetic whole and are thus called 'psycho-physical'/holistic health exercises to remedy what causes stress.

While the attention is kept on the body it does not scatter elsewhere.

And as what we focus on expands, we are able to better tune in within, becoming more able to deal effectively with our tensions, simply by becoming more conscious of them.
