Exercise Stretches are Stretches before Exercise and consist of stretching - would you believe it?! - and flexibility exercises.
They should be done a few minutes before any kind of sport or psycho-physical exercise. Although yoga could be called 'Exercise Stretches' and a 'psycho-physical exercise' in itself.
I personally always start with Exercise Stretches in my own exercise sessions and although I vary what I do,
I include:
Shoulder Stretches
Leg Stretches
Heel Stretch and Calf Stretches
Hamstring Stretch
Psoas Stretch
Low Back Pain Stretches
as well as some Stress Exercises such as:
'Shaking and Breathing'
and this Shoulder Exercise below:
Standing: feet shoulder-width apart, circle the shoulders first back and up, then down, then back up to the original position - 3 times.
Breathing: a quick in-breath on each circle, and finally a long out- breath while letting the shoulders and head fall forward.
Do this exercise 6 times.
I usually follow this with a swift
Self Massage
that takes only about 3 minutes and makes me feel nicely energised and whole.
The purpose of these warm-ups is to keep the muscles supple and enhance your flexibility, increasing the range of motion of the joints, improving the blood flow to your muscles, and therefore helping to prevent injuries before any other kind of exercise.
