There are 3 Levels of breathing, but only one induces relaxation.
Throat and chest breathing, as explained on the
Breathing Exercises page,
are forms of shallow breathing, which is simply inadequate to maintain optimum health and in fact tends to induce stress. When we deep-breathe we are automatically more relaxed, there is actually a decrease in the level of blood lactate, associated with anxiety states (and the reverse is also true).

Breathing is the bridge between the body and the mind.Energy rides on the breath, the breath carries energy into the body.
Breathing deeply we regenerate our vital energy, giving our muscles and internal organs a much-needed break, reinforcing our immune system, and so we feel a whole lot better.
A session of deep breathing and relaxation leaves us feeling refreshed, much more peaceful, and in good spirits.
See my audio on the
FREE Breathing Exercises page.
BREATHING is a forgotten exercise, but very important.
Many of us shallow-breathe most or all of the time. But this is not good for our lungs or indeed our whole system, as like this we stop the process of the vital energy circulation in the body.Exercise which regularly calls for deep breathing is therefore important.
Breathing and
easy relaxation techniques
(and lifting and stretching exercises) are especially important for the disabled or elderly.
Not only does it keep their muscles, bones and heart in good shape, but it also improves immune function.
Relaxation is as important as exercise, but unfortunately it seems that many people find it difficult to relax but don't bother to use - or don't know - any easy relaxation techniques. This may be due to various factors: chronic tension caused by lack of exercise, poor posture (even while sitting down!) or, of course, emotional stress for example.

The 'Breathing and Relaxation Technique' I particularly enjoy is this Standing version
and it is actually also a Chi Kung Exercise.
(See how all these methods relate to each other!)
